Incorporation Day - Town-wide Bell Ringing
Lexington’s official birthday is this Sunday, March 31st, 2013. As the town marks the occasion of the 300th Anniversary of Incorporation, everyone is invited to gather on the Batte Green to ring a bell for Lexington. Bells can be large or small, and the 300th Anniversary Committee expects lots of variation. Part of the fun will be seeing the bells that people bring out to share. If you don't have a bell there will be a basket of interesting bells for to borrow one for the occasion. There will be small souvenir bells for the first 100 participants.
Residents are encouraged to arrive by 5:00 p.m. for a special reading of the original documents marking Lexington’s separation from Cambridge. Norm Cohen, Selectman, will lead the program. Senator Mike Barrett will read a proclamation for Lexington from the State of Massachusetts.
At 5:13 sharp (17:13 military time), the bell in the Old Belfry will ring out to mark the beginning of the commemoration.
Neighboring houses of worship, organizations, individuals and families are all then invited to join the chorus of bells.
Incorporation Day and the Bell Ringing event is sponsored by the Beverly and Peter Kelley Family. The Kelley Family made a generous gift to the 300th Anniversary Committee in 2012 and their contribution has also helped support various activities throughout the 9-month celebration. Peter Kelley grew up right near Belfry Hill, and an event that gathers community together to celebrate on the Green was a fitting event for the Kelley Family. They will bring two special bells for the occasion.
